What is Midsummer?
Midsummer celebrates the summer solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a tradition that dates back to before Christianity, blending historical significance with local culture.
It’s a big deal in Scandinavian countries, and the tradition is alive right here!
This Year’s Theme: Vikings!
Pioneer Village Museum is going all out this year with a Viking theme. Here’s a sneak peek at what they’ve planned:
- Crafts: Try your hand at traditional Nordic crafts like woodcarving, iron smithing and flower crown making.
- Food: Learn to make lefse, krumkake, and vafler—tasty treats from Scandinavia.
- Games: Join in on ski races, frisbee golf, and corn hole. Fun for all ages!
- Costume Contest: Dress up in your best Viking gear for a chance to win in the King & Queen and Little Vikings contests.
- Dance Around the Maypole: A traditional dance that’s all about celebrating life and fertility.
- The Pioneer Grill: Fuel up with Troll Brats and more delicious eats.
- The Bonfire: The big event at 7:00 PM. It’s not just a fire; it’s a symbol of community and warmth.
